Driver to be charged in fatal South Dakota crash

CAVOUR, S.D. – One person died early Friday, Nov. 29, when a car rolled into a ditch on an icy road in eastern South Dakota and charges are pending against the driver, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

About 1:20 a.m., the driver of the 1992 Dodge D250 pickup lost control on the ice-covered road at Cavour, just east of Huron in Beadle County. The vehicle went into a ditch, rolled and came to rest in standing water in the ditch.

Both passengers had to be extricated from the vehicle. A 37-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. A 31-year-old passenger received minor injuries and was taken to the Huron hospital. The 31-year-old driver was not injured.

Names of the three men were not immediately released pending notification of family members.

None of the occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the release, which noted that charges are pending against the driver.
