ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Friends are mourning the loss of a New Mexico rapper killed by a suspected drunk driver. Andrew Martinez, 28, better known as Wake Self, was taken to a Santa Fe hospital Sunday night. He died Tuesday morning.
According to police reports, the rapper was driving with a friend near Camino Alire and West Alameda Street when a truck, driven by 24-year-old Diego Pichardo, crashed into them.
Martinez was scheduled to release his third album “Ready To Live” at Meow Wolf on Thursday. The art collective posted on the event page that the show has since been canceled and that Andrew was, “a monumental force of positivity in the hip-hop scene and one of Meow Wolf’s most frequent performers.”
“He’s left a legacy of giving back to our community, of being a role model, of not only saying and spreading positivity but living it,” Chris Brennan of Reviva said.
Meanwhile, Pichardo has been charged with two counts of great bodily harm and aggravated DWI. This is the third time he has been charged with DWI this year. One of those cases is still pending.
Several politicians, including Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and Rep, Deb Haaland offered their condolences toward the family and friends of Andrew Maritnez.
